RESUMO

Rattus species are thought to live only at altitudes less than 2500 m, but the Asian house rat (R. tanezumi) (RT) has recently expanded to altitudes greater than 3500 m in China. Other Rattus species, especially brown rats (R. norvegicus) (RN), still reach only low altitudes on the Tibetan Plateau. Comparative genomics revealed the positive selection of hypoxia-inducible transcription factors 1 and 2 (HIFs) in RT, with the rapid evolution of HIF pathway genes in RT and Mus musculus (MM) but not RN or R. rattus. Population genomics revealed that genes associated with energy metabolism and oxygen transport were positively selected in RT compared with the other four Rattus species, and two specific substitutions (arginine 31 serine and leucine 33 methionine) were identified in the hemoglobin subunit beta (HBB) in RT. The above results suggested that RT possesses unique genetic adaptations to hypoxia, which was further confirmed by behavioral experiments on RT and RN. Normobaric hypoxia significantly reduced locomotion in RN but not in RT. Moreover, through intraspecific transcriptome analysis, the expression of Hbb and genes related to angiogenesis, oxygen transport, and glycolysis was upregulated, and the expression of genes associated with immunological functions in the liver, lungs, and/or sperm was downregulated in RT compared to those in RN. Interspecific transcriptome analysis further revealed that HIF-1α plays a role in modulating the hypoxic adaptation of RT rather than RN. Our work provides genomic, behavioral, and physiological insights into why RT, but not other Rattus species, could invade the Tibetan Plateau.

For mammals that originate in the cold north, adapting to warmer environments is crucial for southwards invasion. The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) originated in Northeast China and has become a global pest. R. n. humiliatus (RNH) spread from the northeast, where R. n. caraco (RNC) lives, to North China and diverged to form a subspecies. Genomic analyses revealed that subspecies differentiation was promoted by temperature but impeded by gene flow and that genes related to fatty acid metabolism were under the strongest selection. Transcriptome analyses revealed downregulated hepatic genes related to fatty acid metabolism and upregulated those related to pheromones in RNH vs. RNC. Similar patterns were observed in relation to cold/warm acclimation. RNH preferred mates with stronger pheromone signals intra-populationally and more genetic divergence inter-populationally. We concluded that RNH experienced reduced fat utilization and increased pheromone-mediated sexual selection during its invasion from the cold north to warm south.

Photonics-assisted instantaneous frequency measurement of a microwave signal using a silicon integrated microring resonator (MRR) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The frequency of a microwave signal has a unique relationship with the power ratio between the two microwave signals at the outputs of two microwave photonic filters (MPF) with complementary frequency responses. The key device to implement the MPFs is a silicon integrated MMR, which is employed to convert a phase-modulated optical signal to an intensity-modulated optical signal by placing two optical carriers at the complementary slopes of the MRR. For a given frequency measurement range and resolution, an MRR is designed and fabricated, and its use for instantaneous microwave frequency (IMF) measurement is implemented. For the fabricated MRR, an IMF measurement range of 14-25 GHz with a measurement accuracy of ±0.2GHz is achieved.

An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with improved sideband suppression by joint use of the spectral Vernier effect and parity-time (PT) symmetry is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The spectral Vernier effect is implemented using two mutually coupled loops with different loop lengths, to increase the effective free spectral range (FSR). To further increase the mode selection capability to ensure stable single-frequency oscillation with an increased sidemode suppression ratio (SMSR), PT symmetry is implemented, in which the two mutually coupled loops are controlled with balanced gain and loss. Thanks to the combined effects, stable single-mode oscillation with a significantly increased SMSR is achieved. The proposed OEO is studied theoretically and evaluated experimentally. The results show that for a generated microwave signal at 10 GHz, the SMSR is 67.68 dB, which is increased by 11.20 dB or 26.05 dB, when using only the spectral Vernier effect or only the PT symmetry. Thanks to the long length of the longer loop, good phase noise performance is still maintained. The measurement shows that a phase noise as low as -124.5 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 10 kHz is achieved.

A photonic approach to generate a linearly chirped microwave waveform (LCMW) with an ultra-long temporal duration is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The microwave waveform generation is achieved based on spectral-shaping and wavelength-to-time (SS-WTT) mapping by using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and a frequency-shifting dispersive loop (FSDL), respectively. To make the generated microwave waveform have an ultra-long temporal duration, the FSDL is operating to allow a spectrally shaped optical pulse to recirculate in a dispersive loop multiple times with a low propagating loss, to generate a microwave waveform with a temporal duration that is more than one order of magnitude longer than that of a microwave waveform generated using a dispersive element without recirculation. To generate a LCMW, the spectral shaper is configured to have a free spectral range (FSR) that is linearly increasing or decreasing with optical wavelength. The proposed approach is experimentally demonstrated. Two LCMWs, by allowing an optical pulse recirculating in the FSDL for three and seven round trips, tripled and septupled temporal durations of 64 and 182 ns are generated. The generation of two LCMWs with ultra-long temporal durations of 370 ns and 450 ns are also demonstrated.

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) play an important role in parent-infant interactions during the neonatal period of rodents because of the pups' need to be suckled and protected by their parents. However, studies on the effects of USVs on parental care are focused on maternal behavior, and little data on paternal care are available, with especially few investigations in midday gerbils. In this study, we examined the effects of early social deprivation (ED) on offspring due to USVs and parental behavior responses in midday gerbils (Meriones meridianus). The results indicated that the number of USVs in ED gerbils increased on postnatal day nine (40 calls/minute), whereas the number of gerbils in the parental care (PC) group remained high for up to 2 weeks (46.6 calls/minute), before decreasing. The number of USVs and duration of single syllables from postnatal day 3 to 21 in ED pups were significantly lower than those in PC pups. ED increased maternal licking, grooming behavior, and nest-building, but decreased huddling and exploring behavior. Similarly, ED increased paternal behavior, like nest-building, but reduced exploring and self-grooming. Overall, gerbil pups displayed high levels of USVs and various syllable types before weaning. ED significantly reduced the number of USVs and syllable types, but increased maternal licking, grooming, and paternal nest-building behavior.

Quinestrol and levonorgestrel (EP-1, at a ratio of 1:2) are often used as anti-fertility compounds (sterilants) in rodents. As most of the research has focused on the sterility and damage caused in parental reproductive organs, there is little research on the effect of these contraceptive hormones on maternal behavior and offspring's early development. In this study, we examined maternal behavior after treatment with different doses of EP-1 (10 ml/kg) at postnatal days 3 and 10, separately. Various parameters were measured after treatment, including oxytocin expression, serum levels of estradiol and luteinizing hormone (LH), ovary damage after weaning of offspring, as well as the development and ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) of midday gerbil (Meriones meridianus) offspring. At postnatal days 5 and 12, the EP-1 increased maternal licking, grooming, and retrieving behavior, while reducing contacting behavior. Oxytocin expression in the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei increased, while the levels of estradiol and LH decreased. The ovaries and the development of follicles were clearly affected by the treatment. The EP-1 significantly reduced the pups' body weight, the amount and pulse duration of USVs, whereas the frequency range variation of USVs was increased. Overall, treatment with EP-1 during lactation significantly affected maternal behavior and impaired offspring early development in the midday gerbil.

This paper carried out burst tests on the carbon and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber high-strength concrete specimens to investigate the effects of fiber type, fiber content, water content, heating rate and test specimen size on the burst, and the whole burst process of fiber-high concrete was photographed and recorded. The results indicated that fiber addition will improve the high temperature burst behavior of the high-strength concrete, and the performance of PVA is greatly different from that of carbon fiber. The water content and heating rate have little influence on the burst of the PVA test specimen, but they will greatly affect the carbon fiber test specimen. The size of the test specimen has a great influence on the burst. For the PVA concrete test specimen, the large size test specimen bursts on the surface; as for the carbon fiber test specimen, the large size test specimen delays the initial burst time, but the burst becomes fiercer.

Neuronostatin (NST) is composed of a 13-amino acid and amidated peptide hormone encoded in the somatostatin (SST) gene, and plays an important physiological function in diverse tissues. Previous studies have shown that intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) and intra-hippocampally administration of NST can significantly decrease the percentage of novel object exploration time in the step-down test. In this study, to define the contribution of NST to cognitive impairments induced by soluble Aß42 oligomers (oAß), along with the underlying mechanisms. This study used behavioral, biochemical and immunohistological methods to find that i.c.v. administration of NST (3 nmol/mouse) disrupted the ability of spatial learning and memory in mice, led to increase the levels of cAMP, GPR107 protein expression and phosphorylation of PKA at Thr197 in the cortex and hippocampus. NST promoted oAß (1 nmol/mouse) -induced cognitive impairments, subsequently co-injection of NST and oAß increased the levels of GPR107 expression and PKA phosphorylation, which also led to hyperactivation of GFAP in the cortex and neuroinflammation cytokines (IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNFα) both in the cortex and hippocampus. Moreover, it was demonstrated that co-administration of NST and oAß had increased the phosphorylation of Akt and GSK3ß and reduced the levels of ATP and hexokinase (HK) activity in the cortex. Therefore, taken together, this study provided powerful insight into the mechanism of NST for memory impairments induced by oAß, and may potentially serve as a promising target for future Alzheimer's disease interventions.
